Five things to do at sunset in Uluwatu
The cliffs face due west. From the moment the sun lowers under five fingers above the horizon to the moment it dips, you have roughly twenty minutes. Plan your spot in advance. Here are five we keep coming back to.
1. Single Fin, the obvious one
The terraced bar overlooking the Uluwatu break. Get there by 5pm on Sundays for a table on the lower deck or 5:45 any other day. Order an arak sour. The surfers are still in the water below as the sky lights up, it’s the best dinner-and-a-show on the island, and it’s free.
2. The cliff edge below Karang Boma
Twenty minutes by scooter from the villa. A narrow track ends at an unfenced cliff. No bar, no music, no other tourists. Bring a small mat and a flask of tea. Sit on the edge and watch the wave trains roll under you 50 metres below. Leave before dark, there’s no path back without a torch.
3. Suluban Beach, looking up
If you’d rather watch the sky frame the cliffs than be on top of them, walk down the stairs to Suluban Beach an hour before sunset. The cave opens onto a small bay and the cliffs glow orange when the sun is low. Time it for low tide, high tide closes the cave.
4. Padang Padang headland
The famous beach. But the headland to the left of the stairs is what most people miss. A small grass terrace under the bougainvillea, with a clear view back toward Uluwatu Temple as it catches the last light. The temple’s silhouette gets the kecak fire dance going around 6pm.
5. Our pool deck
Honestly. We saved this one for last because most guests don’t realise the villa’s deck is positioned to catch exactly this. A G&T, a daybed, no need to move. The pool turns copper at 5:50, the sky goes pink at 6:05, the bats come out at 6:25. Tell Pak Wayan the time you’d like cocktails, he’ll have them on the deck.
A note on the kecak
If you’re going to the temple kecak fire dance (highly recommended once), arrive by 5:30pm. Tickets are 150,000 IDR at the gate. Sit on the right side of the amphitheatre for the best sunset framing behind the dancers.
